I am going to fit another CIS, this time to an Epson 1290. We use the 1290 for printing circuit board designs onto acetate, so the black needs to be very dense, but the colour does not matter.

I would assume that the pigment inks will give a more opaque finish.

Is it possible to mix pigment black with dye colours?

Any recommendations for a good thick black ink? We are using Lyson fotonik cartridges at the moment, but the colours keep blocking.

You're now asking a very technical question that only a chemist coupled with a printer technician could answer so my recommendation would be to contact someone like Image Specialists (joe@image-specialists.com) and see if they can answer your query re: mixing (which I suspect would be a no) and possibly Gemini colours refillink@refillink.biz (FAO: Robert)...

Between them, they should be able to tell you what you need to know.

I believe that you can use pigment colours in the Epson 1290's but I couldn't be more than 50:50 on that and I'm pretty sure that mixing dyebase and pigment would result in a mess or clog... but hopefully the contact above can help somewhat.

I like to look at what you are trying to do without specific requirement to what printer to use. 1280 is a good printer. If you print black only, I suspect the Epson R2400 will do a better job giving the black color you want. R2400 is especially good printing black only. You can go to dpreview and learn more about this printer.
