Canon iP4200 waste ink pad problems and upgrade kit?

Martin do you have any other information on this?

Ok this thread over at
http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/inkjet/46708
is the first I have heard about the iP4200 having a problem with pigment black ink building up in the center of the waste pads and smearing the back side of prints.
I noticed that on my ip4200 Canon got creative and routed the pigment black ink waste hose over to the center of the waste pads for some reason. I wonder why Canon decided to change the way it dumped all the waste ink in one spot?

This is the quote from “BAB” dated 6/29/2008.

“During excessive printing, ink does not get absorbed into ink pads fast enough causing a build up of ink on the platen roller and the exit rollers.
Canon techs are instructed to replace the ink absorbers with a modified kit that includes a silicon tube, plastic joint, and mylar sheet. The shape of the waste ink pad has been changed
to prevent the ink build up.
If you have a mind to do it yourself and your not under warranty you can purchase the blotter kits at beckscrs.com

Having read the above I hadn't any idea about that and I haven't pulled an ip4200 apart enough to check it mine are setup similarly.

It doesn't make a huge amount of sense though.. I'd have thought it more likely that the ink would clog in the waste tube, backup and then soil the printhead underside.

I'll keep an eye out though... thanks for sharing.

If the iP4200 and newer Canon printers have this same problem it would make your waste kits more marketable.

Very Happy Appreciate the heads up and the idea... It certainly wouldn't hurt to look into it some more.

Thinking about it some more though, it occurred to me that the iP4000 I pulled apart when I first considered a Pixma external waste tank, had two very short tubes that just dumped the ink under the parking pad or thereabouts and didn't redirect it any distance at all. Perhaps that's what they're referring to...

Certainly if the design hasn't changed and they'd still doing that, if someone was to print such that it dumped more than 30ml of ink in and around there, especially if it was hot and hadn't printed for a while (thus drying the ink in that area and effectively sealing the pad) then it'd probably just sit there and rise...

Erk!... Not ideal at all...

Ok.. think you've convinced me... I have a spare iP4200 that's been eating printheads anyway so I guess it's time to sacrifice it in the name of something useful Wink Thanks again Very Happy

They've never been "easy" TBH Smile but it looks from the service manual that your hunch is right... They've changed something and moved it to vent in the middle area.. Oops!

I'll take a unit apart anyway (probably next weekend) and see what the deal is with some photos.
